From his days as a student-athlete at St. Augustine High School, Thompson's skills were apparent as he led his team to multiple CIF championship appearances and earned coveted all CIF honors. San Diego recognized his exceptional talent, nominating him for Player of the Year, while he was selected as an All-CIF quarterback twice during his time with the Saints.

Thompson's journey continued at Northern Arizona University, where he made an immediate impact before transferring to Palomar College. It was here that he solidified his reputation, setting multiple records and securing First Team All-Conference Honors. In a game that will be remembered, Thompson's extraordinary performance against Mesa College showcased his prowess as he threw for a stunning 489 yards and 5 touchdowns. In just 10 games, he finished the season with an outstanding 3322 total yards and 29 touchdowns.

Despite facing injury setbacks, Thompson's determination remained unyielding as he transferred to Northern Illinois, where he continued to impress and left his mark on the field with a memorable rushing touchdown.
